The Course
There are few, if any, sterner tests in England playing from the championship blocks with the course measuring 7250 yards and with a standard scratch score of 76 against the par of 72. This examination is only for the very brave accomplished golfer.
Visitors may play from either the white or yellow plates, the choice based on your own playing ability. The course still measures in excess of 6,900 yards from the whites (SSS 74) and 6,600 yards from the yellow tees (SSS 73). There are very few courses where play from the general play tees provides a standard scratch over the course par.
That said, Notts remains an immensely playable course, and good golf will be suitably rewarded.
The course is situated in a natural valley within Kirkby Forest that utilises the naturally undulating terrain to the full. Some fairways sweep through wooded hillsides and others run through heather, fern and gorse clad valleys. The course feels very much like heathland, but also provides a moorland flavour and a touch of woodland. With varied landscapes, the course comes together really well and many discerning critics will say that the course gets better and better as you progress from hole to hole. Each hole is separate from others and at many points on the course you may feel you are the only person playing.
